ABOUT
Since 2021, the McMaster Mars Rover Team partakes in the Canadian International Rover Challenge (CIRC) every August in Drumheller, Alberta. This three-day competition entails a variety of tasks for our rover complete. Many different teams around the world compete in CIRC and rankings differ every year. CIRC WINTER 2024
In Winter 2024, MMRT’s extraordinary efforts at the first ever Winter CIRC have brought us to victory! We proudly placed 2nd place overall and held our title as 1st in Canada!

The first-ever Winter CIRC pushed our skills and creativity to the limits as we embraced these challenges.
We tackled four challenges, which were:
- Arm Dexterity: Repairing the settlement with salvaged components! Our rover mastered arm dexterity to configure a new system, ensuring a power source for the settlement.
- Avalanche Search & Rescue: An avalanche buried one of our astronauts! An unstable slope prevented human rescue teams from safely reaching the site. Our rover, Faraday, raced against the clock to save them and stabilized the surrounding slope!
- Winter Traversal: Navigating dangerous terrain, our rover autonomously identified a crucial path to getting back to home base. Adaptability and resourcefulness led the way.
- Ice Core Drilling - Sampling Task: After exploring a possible outpost site, we evaluated its potential and gathered ice samples for scientific study. However, thin patches of ice made this navigation difficult! Mapping, analysis, and recommendations—our rover’s journey paved the path for future development.

We tackled five daunting challenges, which were:
- Search & Rescue: Amidst a containment leak and radiation blast, we raced against the clock to save a technician and repair a vital reactor. Nighttime navigation added to the intensity!
- Water Redirection: Shifting priorities meant redirecting water pipelines swiftly! With only 60 minutes, we disassembled and assembled pipelines, ensuring water flowed to the colony's new settlement. Teamwork at its finest!
- Traversal: Navigating the aftermath of a reactor explosion, our rover identified crucial supplies for rebuilding the base. Adaptability and resourcefulness led the way.
- Land Speculation & Prospecting: Exploring a potential outpost site, we evaluated its viability and gathered soil samples for scientific study. Mapping, analysis, and recommendations—our rover's journey paved the path for future development.
- Arm Dexterity: Powering up the settlement with salvaged components! Our rover mastered arm dexterity to configure a new system, ensuring a reliable power source for the colony's future.
